Angel Eyes

Angel Eyes is a project that draws inspiration from deep southern gothic evangelicalism, religion, and surrealism. As well as musical artists such as Ethel Cain and Female Pentimento. My aim was to make a series of images that exhibited hyper realism, whilst experimenting with motifs of light and purity and juxtaposing them with uncomfortable or visually confusing elements in order to border on the concept of the 'uncanny valley'. This is my first attempt at experimental horror, I wanted to make it nightmare-like and invoke a feeling of isolation.

To cultivate this project I have included self directed photoshoot images that I have edited with photoshop and open source AI programs to generate a variety of textures and objects in order to marry themes of biblicism with the ethereal to create striking visual art pieces.

Some inspirations I had for this collection besides musical artists like Ethel Cain, are films such as Saint Maud (2019), Pearl (2022), X (2022), and one of my favourite novels of all time. Ottessa Moshfegh's Lapvona. I also took inspiration from video games such as Outlast 2, Resident Evil 7. All of this media has themes of religious obsession, devotion, and corruption. I wanted to simulate the consuming unnerving horror and make the viewer experience a different dimension.
